season five speculation! [CM]
Aug. 16th, 2009 11:23 pmOkay, I want to talk about Criminal Minds. Specifically, what could happen at the start of season five.
Criminal Minds has tapped D.B. Sweeney for a six-episode arc, exec producer Ed Bernero confirms to me exclusively. “He’s playing a U.S. Marshal who’s brought in to help with a big [case] that arcs through the first part of the season,” Bernero reveals. “He’s a contemporary of our team and knows several members of our team really well.”
If you've spent all summer sweating over Hotch's fate at the hands of the gun-wielding Reaper, rest assured that you'll get your answer quickly, as the premiere picks up right where the cliff-hanger left off. Meanwhile, the rest of the team will track a serial killer who's targeting an ER doctor. The bad news: One of the team will catch a bullet in the process. The good news: There's a doctor handy!
Faceless, Nameless" -- While profiling a killer with a personal vendetta against an emergency room doctor, Agent Prentiss (Paget Brewster) is the first to realize that Hotch is missing, on the fifth season premiere CRIMINAL MINDS, Wednesday, Sept. 23

Okay, so people have been speculating that the whole 'Hotch being shot' incident will be resolved in the first episode. I think this guest star talking about a plot-arc for the first part of this season suggests to me that the serial killer who got away time and time again isn't going to be caught so easily. WHICH IS THE RIGHT WAY TO GO. What makes sense to me is that the team are joined by someone temporarily because they don't have Hotch there, and someone who isn't so emotionally invested as the others, although apparently he knows some of them, which sort of conflicts with that idea. Maybe he doesn't know Hotch though, and so that won't cloud his judgement when it comes to finding the guy who has shot him. I don't believe for one second Hotch is going to be killed off, he is too much the heart of the team, the protective figure who watches over the team and keeps them all together, takes all the shit and the hard parts onto himself to ensure his team can keep doing their job so well. Without him they would all actually come apart, and while that might be interesting TV, it wouldn't work very well for the procedural aspect of the show. If they can no longer track down criminals. Morgan would definitely fall apart; he has a lot of respect for Hotch, J.J. and Garcia would struggle desperately to hold it together but be coming apart inside - Hotch is always there. not as a shoulder, but as a reassurer, and a reality check for people. He doesn't sugar coat, but he tells the truth, the good part of the truth, without pretending there isn't a bad side to things too.
---
Basically, I just can't wait to see what is going to happen next. This show hasn't let me down yet, and I really hope it doesn't start now. I wonder if this might be a good way to let us see more of a personal, emotional side of so many members of the team as they struggle to deal with what has happened. It's been four series so far, after all, and there are still so many things we don't know about these compelling characters!
