I have decided to watch the Chinese drama version of Prince of Tennis - Wang Qiu Wang Zi. I'm just beginning episode three now. It's slightly different to the anime/manga but everyone is still the same character-wise so I'm enjoying it as a sort of AU version.
"If Yuuta were still at Seigaku when Ryoma came", "if Kaidoh were the indulged temper-tantrum having baby of the group before Ryoma came along", "if Sakuno wasn't so clumsy and annoying and a little more mellow".
The only thing I'm having trouble with is the psuedo-bullying that creeps up now and then. Not exactly, because if the Regulars are bullies then they are the biggest hyocrites in the world, and it's mostly Hai Tang throwing his tantrums. And Long Ma is such an arrogant brat it's mostly justified - everyone wants him to realise he isn't absolved from being treated like everyone else because he's been a winner before. But I've just had to stop because somebody has damaged Long Ma's racquet (or duh, Em - swapped it out for an old one - that would fit in with the original plot XD), and if it were one of the Regulars... Well, I suppose it could have been Zhou Yu actually. That's a likely scenario. Poor kid. I did always wonder how it would have been if Yuuta and Ryoma had been in Seigaku at the same time.
[Of course I already ship Guo Guang/Zhou Zhu. I had to check to see if I would this version or not, but characters are characters ;D They belong together!]
OH MY GOD NOW I SHIP IT MORE!!!! GUO GUANG JUST LIED OVER THAT SERVE TO KEEP ZHOU YU IN THE GAME FOR HIS BROTHER. HE JUST LOOKED AT ZHOU ZHU BEFORE HE CALLED IT. AND IT WAS OUT AND ZHOU YU SHOULD HAVE LOST! Oh man, that was rather... Can I say OOC? They're all doing it, Guo Guang and Cheng Wu are both babying him as well as Zhou Zhu. They know that point was his loss and they're keeping up a pretense, and for what? If Cheng Wu was going to let him win and drop from the Regulars he wouldn't have played so well all the way through. I suppose that is his way of backing his captain's decision. But the only way to really justify Guo Guang's decision is that he made it for Zhou Zhu and not for the fairness of tennis at all XD
And yet I wonder if that isn't the point. Guo Guang asked how Zhou Zhu would cope if the issues with Zhou Yu came to a head, maybe he was trying to force it. Because it did happen. Zhou Yu quits. Guo Guang can be quite devious for the sake of his teammates ;)
