Going into watching something with expectations is probably inevitable - when looking for what to watch you choose by description of the show (whether the themes and plot are something you would personally enjoy), or by other people's reccommendations and opinions... But The Return of Iljimae is surrounded by SUCH enthusiasm for how amazing it is by a few people whose opinions I look to, that as I watch it I don't know how much of my response is my enjoyment, how much is me being too critical because I expected so much, and what I really, truly think myself! It's very confusing.

At this point all I can say is, I have really enjoyed watching these last two episodes. I suspect once this is all over I may require a rewatch, without the liveblogging in the background sometimes throwing me out of a scene in order to speculate. Knowing the overall events but being able to immerse myself back into it properly and see how I feel after a second viewing, if it holds up to scrutiny. I guess I'm getting attached and worried these aren't my own feelings, but merely outside influence?

But at the same time, if so many people think it is good there must be some reason, right? XD Although to be honest I'm the type to be MORE critical when other people like something, not less!

- The Return of Iljimae, Episode 13: The gisaeng did it! XD

LOL she is so smitten. It's totally 'be proud of Iljimae hour' and he is not comfortable with it. (Should've thought to keep his mask on more often if he wanted to avoid it XD)

Iljimae doesn't bother with answering teasing questions that don't require an answer XD

Hmmm, I wonder if we're setting up for a confrontation with Iljimae's father eventually. He's clearly corrupt if he could do what he did to Iljimae and his mother.

Ooooh I don't think I've ever seen Iljimae lose his temper with a woman. Feeling too guilty because of the dreams about Dal?

OH OKAY. What if Iljimae doesn't want two women though? XD Geol-Chi, shut up ;)

Exactly! Don't make it Wol-Hee's decision, it's up to Iljimae, and he doesn't want that.

Cold dose of reality for the little princess. Iljimae is a liar though! He so does not enjoy killing as much as he does aiding people. He only does what he has to do. I wonder why he feels it is necessary this time; no proof to give to the authorities?

They can't catch Iljimae if nobody has reported any crimes. Well, they can catch him, but they can't sentence him for anything. Surely Offifer Gu just needs to find him in order to tell him about his mother?

Poor Cha-Dol and Seon-Dal, being watched over and they can't go and find Iljimae!

...They couldn't have worked that part out for themselves? lol

I love how this monk is supposed to be Iljimae's moral compass, considering he is hardly perfect himself.

The only reason I can think of for Iljimae to want to kill this man so desperately is that perhaps he thinks it will turn Wol-Hee away from him, and he won't have to 'forget' Dal?

I do like how he is lying in all aspects of his life now though, he's pretty mixed up and messed up. (Of course just because he has Wol-Hee, and chooses to find purpose by robbing the corrupt doesn't mean life makes sense all of a sudden!)

It's easy to forget just what Wol-Hee knows and doesn't know compared to the audience. She's being very tolerant (and idealistic - Iljimae is only concerned that innocent people will suffer as she did? Not because he can't let go of his feelings for her? Or is she just scared to confront him with that yet?)

Will he do it? Will it be a personal failure to him if he doesn't, for Dal's sake? The people in his who know what they're talking about all think he shouldn't do it.

SNUCK OUT, DID YA? XD Of course the guards are going to let you think you got away clear, so they can follow you right to Iljimae!

(Are they going to actually catch him not just committing robbery, but murder this time? Murder can't be swept under the rug!)

Of course this couldn't be done quietly. Where are all his guardsmen though?! (About time). Iljimae is used to fighting one against many :P

Another thing that is good is how most of these novle families have a skilled fighter protecting their house. So many historical or fantasy set things will have one person with an exceptional reputation, when it's far more likely that many have similar skill levels which happen to be well above the general standard. (You are not a special snowflake, after all XD)

Seon-Dal gets an opportunity to discuss how awesome this weapon Iljimae is facing is. So when he defeats the guy it'll be even more awesome? XD (Although Iljimae doesn't kill, and often uses the temporary defeat as a chance to escape, so we can take that to mean he isn't necessarily more talented than everyone ever.

Iljimae, always merciful <3 It's kind of beautiful. No matter what suffering he has been through, or the angst of not understanding the value or purpose of his own life, he still can't kill others who he views as having so little worth in living.

Officer Gu's moral compass is set so straight he can't even understand motives. Well, he refuses to acknowledge motives. A bad thing done for the right reason is still a bad thing. So now he has no choice? Iljimae has committed so many crimes he can't pretend otherwise. He's ruined their chance to live as a family - Gu, Baek-Mae and Iljimae?

They are divided by the wall of the room. She can only be this honest with him when she doesn't have to look at him :x I like Wol-Hee <3 She is very selfless, but Iljimae takes advantage of that accidentally, and will continue to do so forever if she doesn't tell him things. He's too naive, too focused on his own goals. (I think dramas should make this obvious more often - pairing people up into perfect relationships isn't the only way to go. Some people are not in the mindset and aren't ready to get to that point. Either Iljimae has to continue to grow, or this has to end some time).

Seon-Dal and Cha-Dol will find out Iljimae's birth story now! Awwww.

(Iljimae, why so pretty?)

Iljimae is telling his story to Dal, at the same time Officer Gu is probably telling Seo-Dal and Cha-Dol. I almost want to see the lines intersecting one another, but then it truly is Iljimae's story to tell so it makes more sense that we hear it from him directly.

AH! They are intersecting the story between the two of them! Okay :D Although it's too short!

He acted that really well, I think he shows so much emotion in his face just subtly enough. I don't blame Wol-Hee for crying after learning his story.

Uh-oh, what is going to happen? Is Baek-Mae going to change her mind? Iljimae is a criminal - will she be worried her 'neglect' made him this way? Would she prefer to turn away then see him executed (she doesn't know after all that there's no proof, if the commoners are talking about it so easily it must be true), or have him know his mother saw him executed? This is interesting, and although most dramas have this "can't meet each other" cliche between lovers, this is a different and much more fulfilling way. And they haven't thrown even mroe of the usual cliches at it to keep them apart - most if not all of it has been done in ways that I can completely buy and understand. Subtle, emotional ways that this drama is really handling better than almost all others I've seen. That's becoming it's true strength.

However next episode is set-up to be a bit... hit or miss. Wol-Hee is kidnapped. (How desperately sad is the clip when she says she isn't the one in Iljimae's heart. Does she truly believe that, and is succumbing to despair, or is she trying to convince her captors of it?)

- The Return of Iljimae, Episode 14: Uh-oh, so that's that. Wol-Hee is certain Iljimae only has Dal in his heart. I think it's a little more complicated than that. Dal is his first love, and she's fast becoming an idealised memory. Wol-Hee is here and now, and Iljimae definitely has feelings for her, even if they aren't clear of confusion and doubt over Dal.

You can't arrest a man for arson if the victim says it was an accident of his own staff XD

...Wow, metal-making goods, that's as good as a confession! /sarcasm. How can they be police? Searching without reason, finding nothing suspicious. It's hardly Iljimae's ninja-wear. Can't accuse her of harbouring a criminal.

Ha! At least Officer Gu places the resemblance too ;) Poor Wol-Hee though, it just keeps coming up these days. Dal, Dal, Dal!

...What a turn-about for the crooks! Can't let Iljimae be caught or their own activities will be revealed! Can't live with him, can't let him be caught ;)

OFFICER GU, SERIOUSLY. About time! Exactly! There's no proof of ANYTHING and they were about to cripple Wol-Hee!

...Capture first, uncover his crimes later. Only the king could make such a ridiculous order.

It's just like Iljimae's mother all over again, in that horrible neckbrace :x

She trusted Officer Gu quickly XD How much it hurts her to say that, I think Officer Gu may have understood more than she meant him too.

Pffft, you caused it, Yang-Po! Whose side are you even on? And what are your motives?

Iljimae still has that urge to just run away - no matter what Gu says about him not being that kind of person there have been times when Iljimae does run, to protect people mostly. But he knows that although he could've made different choices now is now and he cannot run when other people are at risk.

Also, he is talking about Dal a lot more now. This is totally the first step to getting over her.

Ah! Yang-Po - from Qing? He means Iljimae's betrothed from when he left? It's been YEARS, and he was disgraced, her family totally would have made her marry someone else. (Although that doesn't mean she would've forgotten Iljimae).

Pffft, Cha-Dol should be better at getting information than this, making them resort to bribing commoners!

Oh Su-Ryeon, how much of this is jealousy over Baek-Mae? You know Gu's motives in this are all to allow her to meet her son!

Blahblahblah I don't think we need more comparisons to Dal.

...The lack of information in this town is outstanding. Iljimae lived with her for weeks, months? And they figure they 'don't know what the relationship between Iljimae and Wol-Hee is'?

He came for you <3

LOL PERFECTLY TIMED RIDERLESS HORSE.

So much for it being pointless to attempt to rescue her alone. Unless he just expects to die now that she's made an escape. (So much for promising her a commitment). (Apparently so, the subs were more like, 'I'll save her, and risk dying myself'.)

Yang-Po has made an appearance. He wasn't bothered about Wol-Hee's rescue, but it matters that Iljimae survives.

(I have to admit the entire execution drums taking him down with flashbacks was a bit OTT. I don't like things like that).

This dude is too invested in rooting for Iljimae, who stole all his gold and turned it into plum blossoms once XD

That cave is an obvious place to look you know. With all this Dal stuff being thrown around, that's where they found Iljimae before. I suppose it could have been forgotten after all those years.

We're claiming the drums issue as PTSD are we? XD

Oooooer. That was unexpectedly sexy.

Poor Baek-Mae! All she keeps hearing is wild stories about Iljimae.

OH LOOK. HIS FACE. SHE'S SO SPECIAL <3 I'm sorry to get ridiculously soft over it, but talk about an instant connection. This is making me so stupid. I am firmly of the belief that you make your own family, that blood means very little, and that your blood relations can let you down, be completely different to you in their morals and beliefs, and that you shouldn't feel obligated to them just because of DNA. But see it matters so much to Baek-Mae to find her son, and it matters to Iljimae that he find his mother, AND I WANT THEM TO BOTH HAVE IT SO MUCH. I know what it is to have a wonderful relationship with your (birth) mother. So my logic is completely contradictive here XD I AM JUST SO GLAD SHE MADE AN IMPRESSION ON HIM. Although I am worried about the impression the stories of him are making on her :x And yet, she has continued on to come to Hanyang from her home, so it bodes well. Technically they share the exact same values - Baek-Mae knew the corrupt noblemen would get away with everything, and how wrong it was. Iljimae does too, and has been doing something about it. Does she know that much yet? She's picked up random rumours, but what about the whole story, his reputation as Iljimae?

Geol-Chi! <3 "No matter what I'll bring Iljimae back with me!" He's so full of bluster, but I love that about him.

OH GOD I WISH HE'D LOOK AT ME LIKE THAT.

OH MY XD (Kissing scenes in dramas generally suck but at least that looked enthusiastic!)

Uh-oh, Baek-Mae has discovered Gu is after Iljimae, but it gets complicated now. We know Gu wants to catch Iljimae first, to try and aid him. Baek-Mae knows Iljimae by rumour, that he's a criminal, so will assume Gu has no choice but to arrest him and have him executed? She can't speak to him about it, he's already gone. I love organic misunderstanding, not forced. And this drama doesn't usually push them over the top either. Where will this go?

(And have they thought to search the cave now?)

YES, ILJIMAE. THINK ABOUT YOUR MOTHER FOR ONCE. Too easily distracted you are, boy!

Oh God, so sad, she doesn't know his face. Of course she doesn't, but IT'S SO SAD THAT SHE DOESN'T KNOW HIS FACE.

See, I'm right, she waited for Gu and no stupid misunderstandings will happen.

OH WHAT A CONSOLATION. EXACTLY. I knew she might have this reaction! If he's sentenced to die, what good will it do to even meet him? It will hurt her and him both. Gu has to stop making promises he can't keep.

Geol-Chi is becoming quite handy! Scavenging for food; he used to be a lazy beggar who thought it was easier than working honestly XD Although he did become a fisherman at one point ;)

Yay, Iljimae! Although I doubt your plan to see Gu and find out about your mother will go at all smoothly.

So Su-Ryeon has an issue with corrupt noblemen too, because of a dead brother. I don't see how she could've been let off - she still killed a man in revenge, even if that man killed her brother first. And become a police officer. But whatever, suspend disbelief.

(Wouldn't it have been enough for her to not forgive Iljimae because his living would force Gu's death, and she loves Gu? Although that would've been reason for us girls to roll our eyes, I guess! "Oh she's only motivated by love of a man, so lame!")

Pffft, "he resembles his mother", that's not a proper answer! "Your son is smoking hot, a hero who probably features in every young girls dreams now." XD

SO CUTE. Something so simple as having dinner prepared for him <3 He's so excited! Finally, the simple life with the woman he loves!

...Is it me, or is that a LOT of rice? (Imagine how much she'll want to feed Iljimae! XD)

You took too long! Where has she gone? :( She HAS gone, this is a goodbye, isn't it?

Baek-Mae, even if you leave... Gu is still obligated to find Iljimae as part of his job. You leaving doesn't mean they'll both be safe to live. Gu won't just stop looking for Iljimae with you gone. He'll want to keep his promise to reunite you both no matter what.

LOL, A FUNNY LOOKING ILJIMAE.

OHOHOH! WHAT'S ALL THIS?! THE EPISODE IS CALLED MEETING MOTHER BUT I'M STILL NOT SURE IF HE KNOWS SHE IS HIS MOTHER FROM THESE CLIPS. AND ALL THAT FLIRTING WITH GISAENGS?! DOES SHE GO BACK TO THAT LIFE AND ILJIMAE FOLLOWS HER THERE?! AND HE AND WOL-HEE SEEMED TO HAVE JUST RECONCILED, WHAT IS GOING ON THERE?!
