The Return of Iljimae, EPs 3-4

emothyThis is much better. More moments of the present time in this story now, and less flashbacks (and when there are they are directly related to the story, short and succinct), and much less annoying narration. There are a few characters I'm really starting to care about, not least Iljimae himself. His situation is none of his own doing, and yet he is suffering big-time.
Also, I am going to start adding images to the top of my liveblogs, because PRETTY :D (eta; Have also added screencaps to the top of nearly all the older liveblogs too :D)
- The Return of Iljimae, Episode 3: So much for going to find out the truth, see he's already convinced ;) And apparently he's sixteen right now. (In reality he was 21 so it's not a huge jump. It's just... He's very well-built for pulling off a teenager ;) Still very slim indeed, but incredibly broad in the shoulders. Hell, what am I saying, I knew someone like that at 16...)
Oh he is going to be all Bambi, wide-eyed and 'everything is new'. That will be adorably cute.
Urgh, this narration is so dumb. We get it, Hweng Bo is purposely making himself stand out so no-one could possibly assume he was a spy.
Kim Jung Hwan. Iljimae's biological father. Just so I can recall that.
Ah! It was about time the madame died, she was old when Iljimae was born. And that knocks off one important person who knows who Iljimae is. Even if she wouldn't have recognised him, never having met him, she would've believed.
Iljimae is so trusting. This poor, sweet boy, how is he going to become someone who fights for what is good and right? He's going to have everything torn down around him for sure. Nobody wants him now :x
Who is this girl who (hangs) with the police?! She's quite pretty, and seems to be there for brains rather than brawn - she looked over Bulgasari and explained his injuries in the first episode.
All this narration is suppose to keep me appraised of what is/was going on in history at this time. It's only confusing me more trying to keep up with all the names and things. Which is why SHOWING is better than TELLING. If I had people and events happening in front of my eyes I could make sense of it more easily!
OH YES THE GIRL IS A NINJA! Or, you know, something awesome and badass ;D Is she his bodyguard of sorts then? :D Su Ryeon.
Yay pretty Iljimae is busting out the fighting once again. Although watching him get picked on was surprisingly awesome :x
Ah, we see Seon Dal's fateful first meeting with Iljime. They tied this in nicely, it was hard to imagine what the situation could've possibly been back then, and now we know! He's an unknown even at sixteen, because he was foreign.
A flash of his posh upbringing in the way he demands to be let out of the cell XD I love that he said he would even 'be a farmer' to be with his real parents, but this kind of little event reminds us the transition just won't be so easy. His personality has been shaped in part by his experiences after all, and his childhood was loving, but priveleged.
Oh dear, nobody back home thought to tell him about the political struggles going on? Was he too sheltered?
LOL. Now we know Hweng Bo was gaining Iljimae's trust for his own ends, but all he did was say something that equated to, "I've just been tortured and you're asking me all these questions! It's not any of my concern!", which yes was mean, but Iljimae could've blamed it on him being so hurt and not thinking about what he was saying. Now he's suggesting the police interrogate Hweng Bo some more to get his own answers as well as theirs XD lol, totally a teenager.
Ah, Officer Gu knows all about Iljimae now. See, this could've all been so easy (if Baek Mae is still alive. I have no real reason to believe otherwise, I just think it CAN'T be this easy, lol), Officer Gu could take Iljimae to her now and reunite them.
Damn, they weren't backward in coming forward about torturing a woman! And this is only about possibly protecting a jewellery thief, it's not like SHE'S a foreign spy!
Yup, he did find out everything. And she is going to tell him it's not true, and be left to die when he knows the truth. He has the potential to be the only one who cares for Iljimae, for the sake of his mother, whom Officer Gu loved.
Hey, I thought they'd killed the beggar when they were looking for baby Iljimae! Is HE still alive?
...Baek-Mae was released after all. (After receiving a punishment, but still... if she was guilty of conspiring with the thief would that really stop her?) I like her, even if she did just point out that Officer Gu knowing the truth won't help her at all, which is basically why she refuses to admit to it. It won't change anything.
Pffft, what would Officer Gu know about Kim Jung Hwan's reaction to a son he refused to acknowledge in the first place? It appears he definitely already had a wife, and a child - that guy must be older than Iljimae! - when he got Baek Mae pregnant. Charming. Of course he's going to deny it now.
That's got to be a bluff, he doesn't know where Baek Mae is! ILJIMAE IS SUCH A BRAT. He wouldn't have half the daring he does to speak back if he hadn't been brought up rich XD lol. It certainly makes these things fun and interesting.
Has he thought to ask where his mother is yet?
Oh honey, he was just your father by biology, you haven't lost anything really. Although being shunned by the man after (accidentally) throwing away your adoptive parents who did love you and protect you and bring you up would be the stinger.

Ah, see, with this one small sentence we see Iljimae has the smarts when he's given time and information to work it all out. He knows now that Hweng Bo is a spy, and has deduced that Iljimae was his ticket into Joseon.
Geol Chi is our beggar! Awww Iljimae go meet the man who played peekaboo with you as a baby, he totally loved you with no reason at all to, because you were a burden he could afford even less than anyone else in the world! I kind of got that this guy had met Geol Chi before, but didn't realise Iljimae would spill all the beans so he'd find that out XD
Oh God, we know who the thief is! We saw him tied to the tree with Geol Chi sixteen years ago. GO AWAY useless narrator who tells us things we already know!
Aww, Geol Chi was so distraught he was stupidly spilling the beans. I like him more and more, even though he is the reason Iljimae's entire life has become such a mess. ALTHOUGH without it happening Iljimae would've grown up the beggar's adopted son, not in a rich family.
Oh Iljimae. How the mighty have fallen :( Funny that he can survive so well like this though, he didn't exactly have boy scouts to join back home XD
And of course theres some random village girl. BUT OH GOD HE LOOKS SO PRETTY LIKE THAT SO I CAN'T BLAME HER. I was just going to point out that in saegeuks village girls seem to exist to wander off and discover things they aren't supposed to XD (And fall in love with roguish characters!).
He caught right up to her, and instead of saying anything, waited until he was close enough to just grab her XD lol, why warn her how close you are anyway? ;)

- The Return of Iljimae, Episode 4: Ooooh it's HER cave he's been sleeping in. Jeeze, take the opportunity to demand payment, or just waltz in and declare everything in the cave for your own use (including Iljimae XD). I'm a sick puppy. Also this we'd better not be expected to believe this girl is also 16; Jung Il-Woo can just about pull it off (especially in moments of Iljimae vulnerability), but she cannot at all. *checks to see how old she was filming this*. Okay, she's four years older than me (and therefore Jung Il-Woo too). So she was 24/25 at the time of filming.
...Calling a boy girl-like is not going to make him all that friendly towards you, you know. And he really doesn't, he's just incredibly pretty. But still a boy XD
Oh god she needs to stop harrassing him now. She's worse than a BOY with a crush who pulls pigtails!
LOL but it makes complete sense that he would fall for her. This is probably the first girl to ever touch him like that XD Too much propriety from rich girls! (And it looked like even the more forward servant girls were afraid to approach him - because he was betrothed and it would offend the wealthy girl and her family?)

GRATUITOUS JUNG IL-WOO IN A DRESS. THERE SEEMS TO BE NO GOOD REASON FOR THIS EXCEPT FANSERVICE. I will continue to keep an eye out for a Legitimate Reason XD (Of course as Iljimae he has no concerns, although he has seen women in them at the jisaeng house and isn't stupid, I suppose foreign clothing is just foreign clothing to him right now).
LOL THE POLICE OF THESE TIMES ARE SO SMART. "OMG he's holding a chicken, he must be the chicken thief!" Way to put two and two together my friends!

And surely Iljimae has forgotten to look for Geol Chi! That boy is so easily distracted.
Yup, she's totally forward. Already thinking about having kids. A kiss barely hours after meeting, and now thinking about kids after a day or so ;D
EHEHEHEHE HE FELL IN THE WATER. SO CUTE. I am sad he's been dumbed down a bit thanks to trouble with supposedly changing languages and misunderstanding common culture, but I can totally get behind the fumbling with the sword thing, because it adds a whole new weight to your balance from learning a martial art. (And he'll become proficient nice and quickly anyway, he's Iljimae :D)

Yeah, duh Su Ryeon. Officer Gu has been after this guy FOREVER, he definitely would prefer you go after Hweng Bo than check he's okay after a tree branch to the face, it's hardly life-threatening! ...Does she fancy him? XD
In the end a fisherman caught him with a net XD Although I doubt they can keep hold of Hweng Bo after losing him so many times, but there you go.
SO MUCH FOR ELIMINATING UNNECESSARY MOVEMENT. That swordsmanship is full of silly spins that do nothing!

Yes, narrator, I get that Offcer Gu is clutching at straws hoping to find Iljimae by investigating a mere chicken thief. What tickles me is that if it's been months as he said then Iljimae has already stopped stealing the chickens by now (his decison), so it's not an issue anymore.
God the scenery really does take the prize for wow factor in this drama. (I would say prize for beauty but you know, Jung Il-Woo and long hair = me practically drooling. Scenery does no such thing).
