Em: lolololol
THIS DAMN SHOW <33333
NEED MORE
Cyn: IT IS EPIC
And to think we have this to look forward to EVERY WEEK *_*
Em: AND THE THING IS, I WAS THINKING, IT'S A KIDS SHOW SO I BET A LOT OF SHIT NEVER GETS EXPLAINED.
FANFICCERS PARADIIIIIIIIIIIIIISE
Cyn: I KNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW
akjsdmkasmd
that makes it so perfect
I forsee lots of gokaiger fic in our future.
Em: And just. gah. I don't want to uhm, meta or anything, but I want to analyse the characters in certain episodes.
In ep22 Joe is all pushy about "promises", and I want to muse on why :x
Cyn: WE WILL
sadksdsakdskd
Character development \o/
Em: And just in general. I swear to God, it isn't coz I adore him; he has the most interesting characterization!
I NEED MORE SID BACKSTORY.
I am convinced Joe just transferred all his unresolved Sid feelings onto Marv.
Cyn: He probably did!
Em: Because we see Sid as a mentor-figure to Joe. And the next thing we see is them fleeing the Zangyack; Sid is the instigator, Sid tells Joe they're going to leave.
And we've seen the way Joe breaks down when Barizorg is revealed to be Sid; he was totally dependant, I think :x
(Omg yes apparently I am going into this RIGHTNOW XD)
Cyn: (I can tell yaaaaaaaaaay omg)
Well, he was getting beat up when Sid found him, left for dead, basically.
And sid found him, gave him worth, and made him strong.
Em: Ah but they already had a relationship; he called Sid "sempai", so there's more to it, Cyn!
Cyn: Oh yeah.
Em: They trained together to be part of the Zangyack forces, and Sid said they were "lied to".
So perhaps childhood friends? Who were made an offer to...?
Maybe elite fighters? They're both very proud of their swordmanship?
Cyn: Well, okay, the Zangyack are taking over planets, right? And so perhaps they grew up together, trained to fight, and then were offered a position with the Zangyacks when they invaded their home planet
Em: BUT CYN
Cyn: Maybe Sid was the one who said "let's go with it because then we'll live?"
What else was there?
Em: When Joe is running away from them, declared a traitor, Marv appears and says, "another planet destroyed by the Zangyack", so I think perhaps they didn't come invading first of all, although it was always their intention. Maybe they came offering trade/deals just to scout the planet out?
And Sid was the one who wanted to get out, he said, "We made the right choice (to do the right thing)", so I see him as more noble than that based on that :)
Cyn: Ooh they made trade/deals rather than destroy the planet, at first - ooh yes. They traded things to keep their planet whole, hence why they started working for the Zangyack.
Em: YOU CLEARLY NEED TO REWATCH CYN <3333 SO MUCH FLAIL ;)
Cyn: I DO
I missed so much with the flailing and everything
Em: So yeah, the Zangyack come offering friendship, trade, lucrative jobs! (As elite fighters or whatever sounds noble XD)
Em: And then Sid and Joe discover actually they're going to be used to overwhelm their own planet
Cyn: And they were young and starry-eyed?
And so they get out when they can.
Em: Except Sid never makes it out :x
Cyn: No. :x
He pushes Joe to get out and doesn't make it out himself.
Em: I think, based on the scene when Sid tells Joe to run, and then Joe glances back teary-eyed and hears them catch Sid (and RUNS because sid has told him to no matter what), he assumes Sid has been killed, right?
Cyn: Yeah, probably.
Em: Because him appearing again as Barizorg; turned into a cyborg rather than killed, really shocks Joe I think.
Cyn: It does!
Em: Like maybe he'd made (a really lousy kind of) peace with Sid being gone?
Cyn: The "at least he's not suffering anymore" type of peace.
Em: And transferred all his ~feelings~ onto Marv and later the rest of the crew XD
Cyn: The dependency and the trust and the need for guidance and everything.
Em: And how his cool exterior becomes his way of shielding himself from letting someone take him for a ride again like the Zangyack did?
Cyn: YES
Em: (Although he quickly latches onto Marv which I blame on a. SID TRANSFERENCE and b. Marv is a true enemy of the Zangyack; Joe knows it upon meeting him who he is!)
God, ep12 XD
Cyn: I definitely need to watch it again!
Em: 11 and 12 really! :D
Cyn: Oh yes :D
And 15 and 16
Em: lololol yes, well. I am not so interested in needing to write Marv backstory, because I love what he and Basco have now. Sexy enemies XD
But knowing their background helps with that! <3
AND JUST UNF
Cyn: Oh yeah *_* unf sexy enemies
It does!
Em: I am going to copy down this stuff XD
Cyn: Good idea! :D
And tomorrow I'll watch more and we'll think about why he's so obsessed with promises xD
Em: Yaaaaaaaay :D
I think he says generic things like, "you should always keep a promise" and stuff, nothing ever specific.
Cyn: oh blah
But we can speculate on why he'd say those
Em: Not that it's complicated considering he promised to Marv he'd be there "for his dream and beyond" XD BUT JOE, SO MUCH PROMISE TO MAKE SO FAST.
Cyn: I KNOW
Em: IT'S JUST ALL SO EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
CYN. FINISH EVERYTHING SO FAR AND REWATCH.
Cyn: I KNOW
.... rewatch again for you?
xDDD
Em: LOLOL REWATCH TO PICK APART EVERYTHING SO FAR.
Cyn: Okay xDD
Em: The most we have is Joe, then Marv, then Luka I think, then Ahim, and NOTHING for Don!
Cyn: I do hope we get backstory for Don!
And I want moooooooooore for all of them
Em: (Debatably we have more for Marv than Joe, idk. We still don't really know why he was a pirate in the first place or how he managed on his own!)
Cyn: (Nope, we have no idea! And do we have any idea on why he hates the Zangyack so much? Beyond the stuff with Basco which is sort of different)
Em: (I think perhaps just because they're competing with him for the greatest treasure... or wait, that might not be until the first ep? Like, the Gokaigers appear on Earth because they know the treasure is there now, and so do the Zangyack?)
And we can probably assume EVERY character had their planet destroyed by the Zangyack
And if Marv's was first; maybe much earlier than the others... They probably hadn't gotten as "subtle" as I'm theorizing they did when they got to Joe's planet.
Cyn: And maybe just bombed the heck out of it?
Em: /nods XD

NOTES:

Ep01 -

Don: "The Zangyack armada, they found us!"
Supports my theory that at the beginning of the series they've been on the run for a while without any Zangyack confrontations. Also Ahim's laidback attitude and mention of it seeming a good planet to live on (an idle comment, but telling!).

Ahim's early comments can be put down to as yet undecided characterization, but I'd like to justify "peasant" comments, and her not knowing some of Marv's quirks yet (find the quote that references this) by thinking she's been with the Gokaigers a couple of months, perhaps, but quiet months without any Zangyack confrontations since her planet was destroyed. They've been on a course to Earth thanks to Navi's directions (that probably happened straight from escaping Ahim's planet, no time to change your mind and not come with!)

Don: Aren't we going?
Luka: I know it's harsh, but tomorrow this planet might not even exist anymore.
Joe: And it will become one of the Empire's colonies.
Ahim: Just like our home planets.

Don is the only one who doesn't seem to have any personal response to planets being destroyed by Zangyack, which supports my idea that his isn't the same story as the others - the Gokaigers defending a planet under attack and recruiting.

My headcanon is that he was an apprentice engineer whose parents had died when he was a teen, and who had apprenticed him to a master engineer only just before that (long enough for him to have adjusted to not living with them, and old enough not to transfer his parental needs onto his master once they are gone). A man who mentored him, a man with a galaxy-wide reputation, which is why the Gokaigers were headed to their planet with Galleon technical difficulties. They go looking for the master who has just died of a sudden illness (am thinking the Zangyack are responsible for this - poisoning or somewhat - but that perhaps Don doesn't know it, maybe he doesn't ever find that out), and find Don instead who Marv harrasses into looking at their ship even though he is all flustered and stammery and not at all sure he is worthy to carry on his master's name. "You know more than any of us do, which is good enough for me! We need your skills." (And then when Marv realises most of what Don does is panic and hide behind other people it's already too late; he's made him a Gokaiger XD) The crew call him Doc out of deference to his engineer skills, having discovered a certificate his mentor was preparing to give to him very soon, once he had completed his training. It's still Don's most treasured possession.

The Goikagers discover the Zangyack are headed their way, into this part of space, and ask Don to make the decision of whether to stay with them or not. Don replies, "I have nothing worth sticking around for", and so never really stops to think about the fighting the Zangyack part of being Gokai Green until later. (Also because thw Zangyack haven't invaded yet I think Don doesn't stop to think about the fact they are possibly leaving his planet behind to be conquered. Although the Gokaigers have a grduge against the Zangyack, Marv's desire to find the Greatest Treasure often overrules the urge to stand up to the Zangyack).

Luka: "Now we've done it. Now we're officially enemies of the Zangyack Empire."
I want to take this to mean that every time before this, from Marv meeting Joe, to the two of them meeting Luka, etc, down to Ahim, each time they've only been defending their own planet(s)/ the planet they were already on at the time before the Zangyack invaded. This time they've directly interfered in the Zangyack's plans to take a planet, Earth (because they want the Greatest Treasure in the Universe!), and have pretty much instigated the fight, not just defended themselves and run away.

PLANET FAMILLE INVASION, AHIM/JOE FIRST MEETING:

When Ahim's planet is invaded the Gokaigers get involved (are they already on the planet for a reason? It might be a good idea if they are, to pick up supplies or something, so they already know the planet is ruled by a royal family). The Zangyack attack, and in the midst of a fight Marv notices some explosion or something and goes off on a wild goose chase, and Joe ends up all, "I'll go save the royal family then..." and of course tells Luka and Don to go with Marv because Marv is crazy, and Joe can handle things on his own, he is that awesome ;)

So he bursts in on a bunch of Gormins trying to kidnap/kill Ahim (the rest of her family are beyond help now and she's on an adrenline rush just trying to stay alive, no time for grief). She's probably picked up chairs and things and broken them across Gormins backs because I refuse to believe Ahim was ever, EVER completely helpless, even if this is motivated by adrenaline. Joe gets stuck in fighting, and when Ahim runs out of furniture and etc to use as a weapon he shouts out and throws her his gun without thinking. (I DON'T CARE HOW SELF INDULGENT IT IS, THIS IS THE BEGINNING OF THE ENTIRE GOKAIGER FOREPLAY TRADITION).

So Ahim gets all badass with the gun, as we know she comes to do anyway (she must have some natural skill at some things, possibly even self-defence lessons just thanks to being wealthy and able to experience anything and everything she likes? I can't imagine any of the Gokaigers taking her on if she was SUCH a liabilty, she must've proved herself in some way, even if it was just being inventive in a fight XD)

I'm thinking later on she and Joe escape/defeat the Gormins, get out and meet up with the rest of the team and get attacked again, and perhaps Marv is convinced to give Ahim the last Gokaiger key in the heat of the moment (as well as Joe's silent approval that carries a lot of weight).

Ahim considers Joe her knight in shining armour, even though he didn't entirely save her - she helped herself a little ;) (I doubt, being the fighter he is, that he would respect a girl he had to keep saving? I mean, the ego boost of being a hero is nice and all, but not... all the time :x I love the idea of the balance - he helps her even though she can help herself. Between the two of them they can do it!). And then from there I have all the episode four stuff backing me up; Ahim doesn't think Joe is incapable of fighting alone, she's fearful of seeing him get hurt. He's her WHITE KNIGHT, it mustn't happen! As well as her constant, "I will fight with you, we can do it together" which is backed by all my above omg.

BUT MOST OF ALL. THE BIT I SQUEED AT WHEN I REALISED IT WENT SO WELL WITH MY JOE GIVING AHIM THE GUN HEADCANON BIT I CAME UP WITH ALL BY MYSELF. BECAUSE SHE OFFERS JOE HER SWORD TO FIGHT WITH. SYMMETRY AND EVERYTHING. SYMBOLISM. HELLO <3333333333333333333333 ILU GUYS.
