I got The Immortal Prince by Jennifer Fallon in the post the other day, but I wanted to finish up what I was reading at the time (Kushiel's Chosen), before diving into it.

So today, I started it. It's nearly 600 pages long, and I'm nearly 300 pages in now. It's just my kind of thing; easy to get into and engaging.

The story is about Cayal, a man who is hanged for committing murder, but survives. He insists he is a Tide Lord, one of the immortal beings that civilization these days don't know of, or believe to be the stuff of legend. The story centres around him, and the woman given the task of trying to prove him for a liar, rather than proving insane (because insane people don't get the death penalty, lucky them!).

Though obviously the attraction between these two characters was going to be a product, I'm not so far in yet that it's a forgone conclusion (especially considering what just happened; seems they should end up never seeing one another again, but this is fiction after all. They'll be back.), what really is intriguing me is the setting, the world.

The Tide Lords, according to the Crasii (which of course, I am giggling at everytime because I liked to read it as 'crazy' and 'crazies'), created the Crasii's. They are a race made by crossing humans with animals. And when I say crossed with, I don't mean human with some animal features. Most of them are described as having animal heads, fur-covered bodies, and tails. They do seem to have mostly human-shaped bodies, and there has been reference to someone having slept with a Feline, to see what it was like.

So far there seems to be only three types of animal used; they are Canine, Feline and Amphibian. Canines have been referred to as 'eager to please', the only ones with an explanation as to why the Tide Lords choose that particular animal. They were created specifically to be slaves to the Tide Lords. They were made with a need to serve.

Of course, being that Tide Lords seem to be nothing more than a legend these days, nobody really believes this history to be true. Doesn't stop the Crasii's from being used as slaves to the humans these days. There is more to it, dealing with the culture, attitudes towards them, and the supposed power Tide Lords have, which fades with Low Tide. But the more I sit here typing about it, the less I am actually continuing reading it XD

And I discovered Fallon isn't a homophobe! Well, hopefully. Which I am happy about XD I did wonder, when I read the Second Sons books, why all the relationships and couples were so... conventional, and whether it was because she was a bit homophobic, and didn't want to write it into her stories. But this story has a gay man in it, and it has bearing on the story; he is married to the main female character, and their marriage is a sham to convince his cousin, the King (who would not react well to homosexuality).
