emothyThe end! Words of warning: watch this and be prepared to fall utterly in love, only to get your heart ripped right out on the journey. Iljimae is the most fucked-up, tortured protagonist I've ever seen (and I've read about FitzChivalry Farseer!). He is so flawed, but I grew to love him so, so incredibly much despite that. And so many other characters. It's such an imperfect world in this drama, though, and it isn't for the faint of heart.
That said, it didn't end badly, and it got me so much because I loved it so much. Well, the characters. The storytelling was weak at the beginning, and also a little towards the end. But the writing of the characters was amazing, and when it was good it was VERY, VERY GOOD.

I am really glad this didn't make Iljimae totally snap and go crazy for revenge. There's no-one to blame. And his birth mother was an imaginary figure in his life for so long she was never going to live up to his expectations. This way she will always be his... angel? In that she died, and seemed so perfect <3
I think he's numb over it like I am.
(Although it isn't direct revenge, that his mother had life ruined by powerful, influencial people plays right into what he has been doing his whole adult life anyway. He needs to end this. The threat of invasion, the corrupt man planning to sell Joseon to Qing. This isn't being pushed in our faces, it's a more subtle connection that was always there).
Ah, will Iljimae go back to Qing as a spy? Pretending to be cowed and resigned to his original fate, before he knew the bigger picture of his birth.
ILJIMAE YOU SHORT-SIGHTED-! WHAT ABOUT WOL-HEE AND GEOL-CHI AND SEON-DAL AND CHA-DOL?
He has some twisted logic, I'll say that for him. The people he loved best have all suffered and died. But he thinks if he ducks his head down, stops playing hero (which wasn't what he was doing, but for the sake of argument XD) and settles down with Wol-Hee he is sure he can at least make her happy. Fuck the bigger picture XD
Except now it's "I have to save the world so Wol-Hee must be thrown aside" - is there no inbetween, can they not come to a compromise? :x (No, I know they can't).
I do love how Geol-Chi is so protective of Wol-Hee now though <333

Okay, she's pathetic, but he reduced her to this! He has pushed all of his fucked up onto her, accidentally, and has to keep throwing her away in order to save her because she won't take any other answer than for him to stay and ignore the imminant threat of war :x WHICH THEY WOULD DIE IN ANYWAY.
(Also, we know he has just watched his own mother die, after finally reuniting with her after such a hard life for each of them. Wol-Hee has always been second to Dal, and his mother too, in a different way. Iljimae should never have tried to have a relationship, being as fucked up as he is. But he didn't know that XD).
Oh you silly, fresh-faced, innocent girl XD Iljimae would crush you into dust with his angst and fierceness.
I kind of feel bad that I don't feel anything to learn that Iljimae's adopted mother died, and his father has pretty much become a hermit somewhere unknown. I think the sting of them having lied to Iljimae his entire life, combined with us not seeing them much in this drama has led to that. While I knew his birth mother pined for him every day of her life.
Character count: Iljimae, Yang Po, Hweng Bo, Su Ryeon and evil!monk dude are all in Qing now.
The fan has been given to Iljimae by that official from Joseon as a marker to sniff out other spies to exchange information with?
Hmmm, but Iljimae can do more than spy and sniff out information. Iljimae is a master at breaking and entering, and theft XD

This trio of girls are quite cute. I like how they do everything together XD Although considering they seemed to go the head of the Royal Guard, are they backstabbing Iljimae? Have Qing bought them? Or are they leading the Royal Guard on a false chase?
Why is he wasting time playing with the sword? BOYS AND THEIR TOYS, HONESTLY. Oh! So he could steal it and the Emperor would be alerted to Iljimae's presence.
OH LOL. Thank God those girls weren't betraying him! They got Wang Hweng Bo! XD I thought there might be a hidden motive - it's too late in the game for Iljimae to get caught again now, surely!
Heh, one robbery and that's it for staying in Qing? Usually I think I'd be complaining about the uselessness of this - going all the way there for very little - but we're moving so fast (not in a bad way) that I'm not really bothered. We're rolling towards the end now!

AWWWWWWWWWWW OMG. Years ago Baek-Mae gave Geol-Chi that ornament to pay for things for baby Iljimae, and it's been kept so long that now it can be used for Iljimae's baby :D (Fate?)
That is NOT a newborn baby. I would've assumed a year had passed, and she'd given birth about six months ago. (Of course it's a boy).

(And the shaman woman predicted that all those close to Kim Ja-Jeom would die horribly... WE ONLY HAVE SO MUCH TIME LEFT OF THIS DRAMA).
Geol-Chi carrying a baby on his back is one of my favourite things XD I am sort of glad Wol-Hee has had to suffer a little of the reality of war. She wasn't taken captive, she's in Joseon still, in her home. But resources are growing scarce, and escaped prisoners keep coming back all the time looking so worn right in front of her eyes. I know she must be running on blind faith that Iljimae has survived. Or uhm, delusion ;)
And as if making paper is important! I'm sure anti-Qing propaganda would get them all arrested anyway. Paper is not a priority. FOOD IS.

Finally, bittersweet as it is, Wol-Hee seems to be proud of Iljimae helping the Joseon prisoners to get home. Even though she knows it means he isn't there with her, and their baby he has no idea exists (oh drama cliches XD). So bittersweet. But I'm glad she seems to accept it now. Having the baby has probably changed her.
OH ILJIMAE. You weren't selfish! You were just DUMB XD And nobody ever got to teach you how to love properly. Your adopted parents probably came closest, but they lied to you, too. So that wasn't the right kind of love.

I've yet to see why we needed to skip nine years, other than for dramatic effect. Cha-Dol could have finished the story and come back (it isn't even finished until Iljimae is back with Wol-Hee and their son!), Hweng Bo could've joined the Royal Guards, Iljimae could've been helping people escape... A year, two. Why nine? It's not like any of the regular cast have aged convincingly.

I am glad the drama acknowledged this, because it was a little bit of an anti-climax to losing the war. But it's the truth. There will always be evil. I've yet to see why we needed to skip nine years, other than for dramatic effect. Cha-Dol could have finished the story and come back (it isn't even finished until Iljimae is back with Wol-Hee and their son!), Hweng Bo could've joined the Royal Guards, Iljimae could've been helping people escape... A year, two. Why nine? It's not like any of the regular cast have aged convincingly.

Oh Iljimae. You saved everyone in Joseon, you got everyone home, and it's still just not enough. I am glad the drama acknowledged this, because it was a little bit of an anti-climax to losing the war. But it's the truth. There will always be evil. And yet... there will always be those who are prepared to fight it.
A bittersweet ending, but that doesn't make it bad. (I still think they could've got a younger kid and only skipped a couple of years at the end there. He could still have apologized for missing him growing up). Cough.
